The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended selected screening
for tuberculosis. If you answer "yes" to any of the following
questions, then you should discuss TB screening at your child's next checkup.
- Has your
child had contact with anyone with confirmed or suspected tuberculosis?
- Has your
child had contact with anyone in contact with people in prison over
the past five years?
- Has your
child relocated from an epidemic area (Asia, Middle East, Africa, Latin
America)?
- Has your
child traveled to an epidemic area in the past 2 years?
- Has your
child been exposed to the following persons?
- HIV-infected
- Homeless
- Residents of nursing home
- Institutionalized adolescents or adults
- Users of illicit drugs
- Incarcerated adolescents or adults
- Migrant farm workers
If your child
has ongoing exposures to the above questions, then they should be screened
for TB every 2-3 years.
