Infants and children frequently put anything (or everything) they find
into their mouths. Occasionally, a child will swallow a harmful object
(such as another person's medicines, rat poison, cleaning supplies, etc...).
Thus, it is very important for parents to be prepared for such an event.
We recommend
the following .....
- Have
the poison control phone number in an accessible place (such as the
refrigerator door or next to the phone)
- The
number is 404-616-9000
- Have a
medicine called ipecac available in the house as this medicine will
cause your child to vomit
- Do
NOT give ipecac unless directed by poison control or your doctor
- Each
month check the expiration date and keep current
What should
you do if your child swallows a harmful substance, chemical, etc...?
1) If your
child is unconscious, not breathing, difficult to awaken, blue, having
seizures, etc, then call 911 immediately otherwise...
2) Call poison control (404-616-9000) and follow their instructions
3) When everything is stable, call our office to let us know what happened
