Hepatitis A Vaccine (Havrix or Vaqta)

What is Hepatitis A?

It is a virus that affects the liver.

How common is Hepatitis A?

Prior to the availability of the vaccine, there were 26,000 new cases of hepatitis A in the US each year.

How do you get Hepatitis A?

Hepatitis A is acquired by putting something into one’s mouth that has been contaminated with the hepatitis A virus.  This can include fruits or vegetables, especially those which are imported from other countries and not washed well prior to eating.  It can also include items contaminated with the stool of a person who has hepatitis A.  Usually this results from poor hygiene, such as not washing well after using the bathroom.

What are the symptoms of Hepatitis A?

The symptoms of hepatitis A may occur up to 50 days after exposure to the virus.  The symptoms usually start quickly and can include fever, vomiting, poor appetite, low energy, belly pain, nausea, dark colored urine, and jaundice (eyes and skin turn yellow).  Though the symptoms usually resolve within a few weeks, some people may experience recurrent symptoms for up to 6 months.  About 1 in 150 infected people will develop liver failure and may either die or require liver transplantation.

How can I prevent Hepatitis A infections?

First, always wash your hands well after using the bathroom or changing a diaper.  Teach your children to always wash their hands after going to the bathroom.  Also, wash your hands well before preparing or eating food.  In addition, all fruits and vegetables should be thoroughly washed before eating.

Second, vaccinate yourself and your children against hepatitis A.

Who should be vaccinated?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children 12 months and older receive the vaccine.  If you plan to travel with your children outside of the United States, we strongly encourage your child to be vaccinated prior to traveling.  Please discuss any questions with your practitioner.

How many doses are needed?

Two doses are required 6-12 months apart and will start protecting you within 4 weeks of the first dose.

How long does the protection last?

Recent data indicates that protection from the 2 dose series lasts for at least 25 years.

Can the vaccine cause the disease?

No.  The vaccine is inactivated and cannot cause hepatitis A.

Where can I get more information?
