Residential Fires
Being prepared for a fire in the house can help prevent injuries and death. The American Academy of Pediatrics has recently made recommendations for families to follow in order to be prepared (June 2000). These include
- SMOKE ALARMS... After installation, should be tested monthly. Batteries should be replaced at least yearly.
ESCAPE PLAN...- Plan at least 2 exits (if available) from each room
- Plan a meeting spot outside where the family will meet
- Practice every 6 months (do not practice dangerous activities such as climbing out window)
- LEARN WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF FIRE (teach kids older than 3)
- Smoke alarm sound means to leave the house and go to the designated meeting area
- If smoke is present in a room, then crawl on hands and knees under the smoke
- If clothes are on fire, then stop, drop, and roll followed by application of cool running water as soon as possible
- FIRE EXTINGUISHERS... not only should these be available in the house, but adults should periodically review the instructions for their appropriate use
